The Lakeland UV Polar Predator (8 Products in this Category)
Some eight years ago Lakeland was predominately a fly tying business, with Nigel using the latest products to design unique fly patterns, this was the birth of what you see today. Recently Nigel as been feeling frustrated with the huge range of new products Lakeland are stocking and the same old patterns in the magazines. Nige has started fishing again and more importantly designing new patterns without standing results. It’s fine tying new patterns but they have a job to do and that is to catch a lot of trout and they do. The original design as now taken over 50 trout in no more than 12 hours fishing! What Lakeland would like to do is produce a fly design section with Nigel producing new patterns throughout the fishing season. Each pattern would have an high resolution image, a list of materials required and fishing information given by Nigel.
The weather in Cumbria has been really cold and windy for the first part of the fishing season with the weather conditions dictating the fishing methods. With so many new products available it gave Nigel the chance to experiment. With very cold windy conditions it was obvious that if we wanted to catch fish we would have to use lures and then evolve the patterns as the conditions improved. The original UV Polar Predator was tied on a Varivas 2500V size 10 Streamer hook with a 4mm Black bead and then developed using the same products but tied on a Varivas 2400V size 14 with 2.8mm Enamel Beads so it could be used on a floating 5 weight line for stunning sport! Like a lot of patterns it’s a case of trying different colour combinations, Nigel as tried Olive and Black so far, with olive being the top colour so far but this could change. The tail is marabou blended with 8” Ice Wing Fibre the body is UV Polar Chenille, with a soft hen hackle just behind the bead, try different coloured beads, so far Black, Orange and Chartreuse have caught a lot of trout with chartreuse being the top catching colour in the 2.8mm size 14 fly.
