The Mini Sculpin Helmet is a smaller, versatile version of the popular Fish-Skull® Sculpin Helmet that has been specially developed for tying a broad range of freshwater and saltwater flies.
The “Mini” is the newest addition to the Sculpin Helmet family and is perfect for tying smaller, weighted streamers to target freshwater species such as trout and saltwater “flats” species such as bonefish and redfish.
The smaller head is much lighter and about the same width as standard size bead-chain eyes. This makes for easier casting and allows the fly to enter the water with less disturbance than heavier versions or dumbbells. In addition, the Mini Sculpin Helmet has an innovative new weed guard feature and is designed to fit a much larger range of hook sizes.

Q: How many sizes are there now in the Sculpin Helmet family?
A: There are now 3 sizes; the new Mini, Small and Large sizes.
Q: How big is the new Mini size?
A: The Mini size is about 25% smaller than the Small size Sculpin Helmet enabling anglers to tie smaller, lighter flies that are easier to cast. For perspective, it is about the same width as standard bead-chain eyes.
Q: What hook sizes can be used?
A: The Mini is designed with a specially enlarged front slot to fit a much wider range of hook sizes: typically in the #10, #8, #6, #4 or #2 size range. This increased flexibility in hook sizes allows the Mini to be used in a wide variety of freshwater and saltwater fly patterns.
Q: What are some typical FRESHWATER flies that could be tied?
A: The Mini will allow you to tie smaller, weighted trout streamers on a #10, #8 or #6 hook.
Example: Smaller sculpin or baitfish imitations for use in shallower streams can easily be cast with a #4 or #5 weight fly rod.
Q: What are some typical SALTWATER flies that could be tied?
A: The size and “always hook upwards” orientation of the Mini offers a viable alternative to using bead chain eyes or small dumbbells for typical shrimp, crab or toad flies that target saltwater “flats” species such as bonefish, permit and redfish.
Example: The ability to put an oversized hook (#4 or #2) on the relatively small, lightweight Mini is perfect for tying typical bonefish flies like a Gotcha or a Crazy Charlie.
Q: What is the new weed guard feature?
A: The Mini has a small hole on top of the head that will allow you to add a simple weed guard if you desire.
Example: A simple weed-guard can be created using 20 lb or 30 lb mason hard type mono-filament or titanium wire. This option is sometimes an important feature for flats flies being fished in a weedy area.
Q: Does the Mini come with Living Eyes?
A: Yes, we include a full set of Fish-Skull® Living Eyes with the Mini.
Q: What colors does the Mini Sculpin Helmet come in?
A: We offer a choice of 3 colors that should cover most freshwater and saltwater applications namely Olive, Brown and Silver.
Q: What is the “weighted keel?”
A: Sculpin Helmet flies are designed to be fished deep with the hook riding in the “hook upwards” position to avoid getting caught on the bottom. Therefore, the Sculpin Helmet is designed so that 70% of it’s weight and the center-of-gravity is situated below the shank of the hook. This heavily weight “keel” or bottom gives a “dumbell effect” to the fly which means it will always land and swim in the hook up position.
Q: Can I use the Mini Sculpin Helmet for tube flies?
A: Yes! The front slot has been designed so that both hooks and tube flies can be tied.
Q: What do I get in each pack of Mini Sculpin Helmets?
A: There are 8 helmets in each pack. We also include a full set of Fish-Skull® Living Eyes which eliminates the additional cost of buying the 3D eyes separately.
Q: Is the tying method for the Mini the same as the other size Sculpin Helmets or Fish-Skulls?
A: Yes. The basic method of tying is exactly the same; i.e. tie in all your materials first and then fit the Sculpin Helmet last from the front of the fly.

The innovative Nymph-Head™ design significantly improved the common, round fly tying bead when it was launched in 2007. The simple addition of realistic 3D “nymph eyes” created a more realistic fly profile. It also added 15-20% more tungsten weight to the bead which greatly improved the sink rate of the fly. 1. More Realistic Fly Profile
Nymph-Head™ beads have realistic 3D “nymph eyes” that imitate the eyes of natural insects. This an improvement upon the common round fly tying bead and enables the fly tier to create more effective and realistic imitations of aquatic trout food!

Q: Why is this shank simple and easy to tie with?
A: The shank is held straight in any vice avoiding the need to tie the fly at strange angles. It allows a fly tier to easily attach a free-swinging stinger hook or do a direct hook-to-shank connection using the rear loop.
Q: What is the difference between Senyo’s Articulated Shank for Steelhead & Salmon flies and the normal Articulated Shank?
A: Both shanks work very well, but Senyo’s Articulated Shank has been designed with special features that modern steelhead and salmon fly tiers have been asking for. The most significant of these is having a loop up-eye at the front of the shank, stronger wire, a slightly smaller rear loop and the choice of bright, vibrant shank colors that enable fly tiers to take the color blending of materials to a whole new level.

Q: Is this shank intended for tying traditional and classic flies?
A: Not really. This shank is intended for the tying of the more contemporary steelhead and salmon flies that have been gaining in popularity in recent years. Examples include Intruder-style and various types of articulated Alaskan-style flies used for catching Pacific salmon species. However, if you enjoy tying classics then combining these techniques with the shank may offer some interesting possibilities for new flies.

The Fish-Skull™ CrawBody is a realistic, anatomically correct crayfish (“crawdad”) exoskeleton that is made of the same light-weight, synthetic suede material as the Fish-Skull™ Frantic Tails.
CrawBodies are easy to use enabling even a novice fly tier to create simple, but effective crayfish imitations.

Q: How many colors are there?
A: We offer the two basic crayfish colors–olive & brown–and intend to expand the color range at a later date. One of the great advantages of synthetic suede fabric is that it accepts permanent marker pen very well which allows fly tiers to make subtle color changes or markings as desired.
Q: How do you get so much detail on the bodies?
A: Each suede body is precision laser cut making each body 100% identical and with very fine detail (for example, see the detail on the claws of the small CrawBody which is only 1″ (2.5cm) long).
Q: What happens when the suede material gets wet ?
A: Once in the river, the suede fabric absorbs water, gets a little darker and takes on a very natural looking “leathery” appearance. The suede becomes softer, resulting in much more action from the free-moving crayfish claws.
Q: How many sizes are there and how do you suggest we weight CrawBody flies?
A: There are four sizes: The SMALL size matches #8 or #6 streamer (4XL) hooks. The MEDIUM size matches #4 or #2 streamer (4XL) hooks and can be weighted with the Mini size Sculpin Helmet. The LARGE size matches #2 and #1 streamer (4XL) hooks and can be weighted with the Mini or Small size Sculpin Helmet. The X-LARGE size matches #1 and larger streamer hooks (4XL) and can be weighted with the Large size Sculpin Helmet. These flies need to be fished deep, on the bottom where crayfish typically hide. Tie your flies in a hook upwards position and use a Sculpin Helmet, lead wraps on the shank or a dumbbell to weight the fly.

1. REALISTIC BAITFISH PROFILE
• The Fish-Skull™ design mimics the head, eyes and gill plates of a baitfish producing a more realistic looking profile.
• The realistic size head typically “pushes more water” than traditional flies.
2. WEIGHT
• Fish-Skull™ adds weight to your streamer pattern. They are made from a lightweight metal composite that allow us to create a realistic size fish-head with a large surface area, but without adding excessive weight.
• They weigh roughly about the same as an equivalent hook size dumbbell. Weight as follows: Small skull is 0.48 grams (0.017 ounce), Small-Medium skull is 0.79 grams (0.028 ounces), Medium skull is 1.26 grams (0.044 ounces), and the Large skull is 2.46 grams (0.087 ounces).
• For the SMALL size Fish-Skull we suggest to use Rod/Line weight size #5 and higher.
• For the new SMALL-MEDIUM size Fish-Skull we suggest to use Rod/Line weight size #6 and higher.
• For the MEDIUM size Fish-Skull we suggest to use Rod/Line weight size #8 and higher.
• For the LARGE size Fish-Skull we suggest to use Rod/Line weight size #9 and higher.
