Lakeland Fly-Tying began trading in January 2000 and over the last 16 years we have strived to become the modern, efficient online and mail-order business we pride ourselves on being today. Over the years we have developed a reputation amongst our many valued customers for carefully selecting and stocking high quality products and presenting them at the right price. As we have grown, we have invested a great deal in improving our ability to serve our customers better - introducing sophisticated stock management and order processing systems to ensure your experience of shopping with us is both fast and efficient. This allows us to ensure that all orders received before 1.00pm (GMT) will be winging their way to you that very same day.

Success has not been easy. The last 13 years must have been one of the most testing periods in history for a fledgling business. Outbreaks of the foot and mouth disease in 2001 destroyed our second year of business. This was followed by avian flu and then what seemed like years of severe weather throughout the Summer. It destroyed many of the Game Fairs we attended and, to some degree, depended on not just to sell but to say a fond "hello" to our faithful supporters. Just when you think things can't get much worse we enter the worst recession for a generation. Throughout this period Lakeland has developed and adapted to become a much stronger and driven business; one with a clear and strong business plan that is determined to be here for you for many years to come.

Through hard work and a determination, Lakeland have developed incredibly strong relationships with the world's biggest suppliers and with the support of companies like Whiting FarmsRenzettiHMHDyna-King,WapsiPartridge and Veniards we now stock extensive product ranges from your favourite and most trusted brands. As the economy improves, Lakeland will continue to develop the product ranges so you can enjoy the many new items arriving each and every month. Lakeland's aim over the next few years is to increase product availability and offer our customers an even faster and even more efficient purchasing system with a web site that is both a pleasure to use and browse.

… and don't forget, if you need advice on our service, our products or even how to make the best use of the things that you buy, give Lakeland a call. We're here to help.

Articulated Wiggle-Tail Shank for Trout, 20 per pack

Articulation for smaller trout flies now made  easy!

The Articulated Wiggle-Tail Shank offers a convenient way to tie articulated “wiggle-tails” or rear body sections on nymphs, emergers, small streamers and even dry flies.

    Key Features:

    • This simple product eliminates the need to “sacrifice a hook” to get a shank.
    • A single product flexible enough for flies in the #6 to #18 hook size range.
    • The long shank is easily trimmed to the tail length needed to match the size of fly being tied.
    • By design the shank can be bent if a curved tail is desired on the fly.
    • Wire diameter thin enough to tie articulated flies as small as #18 and even light enough for dry flies.

The Articulated Wiggle-Tail Shank is a simple product giving fly tiers new opportunities for creativity.

Q: Are “wiggle-tails” a new fly tying concept?

A: No, for many years fly tiers have been tying these types of flies by cutting off the bend of a hook in order to get a shank upon which to tie and attached the tail to another hook. The Wiggle-Tail Shank is simply a ready-to-tie shank that eliminates the need (and cost) of “sacrificing a hook” and is also flexible enough to be used for a wide range of fly sizes.

Q: Why is this single size product flexible enough to tie flies in the #6 to #18 hook size range?

A: The Wiggle-Tail Shank has a wire diameter roughly the equivalent of a #18 hook, but a length of 20mm which is roughly equivalent to a #6 hook. The unhardened steel shank can easily be cut using a small pair of side-cutters to match the size of fly you want to tie . Because of the thin wire diameter, you will always have a thin, elegant tail section of your fly… even for  the smallest of flies.

For example: You may want to tie a large, articulated stonefly using a #6 hook and the 20mm shank length may be the perfect size for a nice long body. Then you want to tie a size # 16 articulated emerger, so you then simply tie the tail the correct size (maybe 8mm long) and then cut-off the excess shank you don’t need. The tail of your emerger has the right proportion and taper because it is tied on the shank (now only 8mm long) which is still the equivalent diameter of a #18 hook.

In summary, this single product is flexible enough for a wide range of sizes.

Q:  Can the shank be bent?

A: Yes, the shank is made of spring steel which means it is rigid enough to be placed in a vice to tie your tail.  HOWEVER, under some pressure it can be bent if you desire a curved tail on your fly. Tie the tail, then bend it. You are no longer restricted to having only a straight tail on your flies. Be creative!

Q: Could dry flies be tied using the shank?

A: Yes, because the wire diameter is roughly the equivalent of a #18 hook it is very thin and light. There is no reason that larger size dry flies or foam flies could not have an articulated tail or rear section. A good example of this is Vince Wilcox’s recent article entitled “Articulation Perfection” that appeared in the Winter 2011 Fly Tyer Magazine.
