Wow! About 10 years ago I got hold of a half of one of the first CdL saddles from Whiting. That was a natural pardo. I was not disappointed with at all, it wasnt quite like the feathers I had from Spain, but was 90% there. I tied a lot of flies from it, I mean many thousand. Once tied in to a fly the feather barbs were indistinguishable form the "real" thing. Since I obtained that half saddle the people at Whitings havent been idle. My new one is simply amazing. The feather barbs are as stiff and shiny as the old ones, however, they are longer, as are the feathers themselves. I would estimate that I could tie 3 dozen dry fly tails from one hackle, possibly more, a lot more. This time, on Nigels advice I went for a dyed one. It is a very sympathetic dye job. Not too brash, just enough to enhance the pardo pattern of the feathers. These capes are a good sum of money, but they are not by any means expensive. The improvements Whitings have made are so huge that it represents better value than it did 10 years ago. I would recommend that you get together with a friend, each buy a saddle of different colours and halve them, then swap half them. Will I buy another? Probably not in the same colour, Ill not need to. If a half saddle lasted me 10 years, this new one is a full saddle with feathers twice as long, well it should last me well into my 90s. But I am tempted by the other colours! If you are not convinced yet contact me through www.crackaigflies.co.uk. If you tie dry flies, you need one of these in your life!
